Lauren Ko, a 30-year-old amateur baker living in Chicago, started an Instagram account to show off pies she had baked in August 2017. Just a few months later, she has almost 50,000 followers. And when you see her pies, you'll see why.
"I come from a family of eaters and phenomenal home cooks, so it feels a bit like I've been cooking and baking my whole life," Ko told BuzzFeed in an interview.
But she only started baking pies a year ago after being inspired by things she saw on Pinterest. She quickly developed a precocious knack for it.
"I'm driven by color and pattern, so I'm constantly brainstorming color combinations and geometric patterns that I think I can replicate with pie dough [and] fruit," Ko told BuzzFeed. "What I create during a particular baking session is also often informed by produce that is in season and what's currently in my fridge."
"I usually have some nebulous idea in my head for design and then just improvise as I go along, depending on how well the dough or fruit cooperates with my vision," she added. "My final products are generally happy accidents, which is why I'm especially stunned by the feedback!"
And, according to Lauren's "fan club" at her job, where she often foists her bakes onto coworkers, they taste good, too.
