Empire star Taraji P. Henson has never been one to shy away from talking about her personal life. Since her rise to stardom, she has been an open book about her boyfriends, past relationships, and family.
So when the news broke that Taraji and her fiancé, Kelvin Hayden, had officially called it quits, Taraji made sure that she was the one to make the statement clear.
Taraji called off her engagement to former NFL pro Kelvin Hayden.
The 50-year-old actress confirmed she was single again during an interview with Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club. Taraji explained that she and Kelvin tried to do couples therapy to save their relationship, but ultimately the two couldn’t work it out and decided to go their separate ways.
"I haven't said it yet but it didn’t work out. You know what I mean?" she explained. "I tried, I said, 'let's do the therapy thing' but if you're both not on the same page with that, then you feel like you're taking it on yourself and that's not a fair position for anybody to play in a relationship."
"My happiness is not his responsibility and his is not mine," she continued. "We have to first learn how to make ourselves happy, to make each other happy. So, when one person is taking on the weight of the entire relationship, it's never going to work. You have to show up, yes you want to be understanding but you can't lose yourself in that understanding. You have to still stand up for yourself and be there for yourself but it's hard to do if the other person isn’t doing that either."
The couple had originally postponed their wedding due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Taraji talked about how wedding planning was going during the novel coronavirus pandemic. "Well, everything, it's halted. It was supposed to be June, but it's complicated with corona," she shared. "Corona has everything [up in the air] because now you're talking about a date that you had planned that you might not be able [to stick to]. It's a mess. It's a mess, so it might be in the backyard."
"It's probably going to be a backyard wedding," she continued. "It would break my mother's heart, [after] all these years, she had been wanting to see me get married and [now] it's got to be virtually?"
Before the two were on the rocks, Taraji gushed over how she and Kelvin fell in love. She revealed that the two really connected in wine country. "That is where he said he fell in love with me," she recalled. "We both went to the wine country and it was our first time together at the same time. He had never been, I had never been, and I did feel him fall in love."
Taraji has dated celebrities like Common, Lamar Odom, and Hill Harper.
Before her engagement to former NFL pro Kelvin Hayden, Taraji had an impressive list of boyfriends. According to Ranker, she dated actor Hill Harper from April 2002 to 2005. She then went on to date rapper Common from October 2005 to February 2007.
She also dated Khloe Kardashian’s ex-husband, Lamar Odom. The two allegedly were together from October 2008 to June 2009. According to rumors, she turned down his marriage proposal.
