Spoiler alert: This article reveals the major plot twist of The Drama.
When The Drama was announced, audiences knew they weren't in for a typical flick about the trials and tribulations a pair of soon-to-be married folks. The fact that A24 produced it was a clear indication that there was probably something off about the relationship between the two leads.
And then you add the fact that two high profile stars, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, are leading the project, and that only sparked more curiosity among potential viewers.
And folks who saw the movie when it dropped on April 3, 2026, learned that there was indeed a plot twist that was the source of the "drama" in question.

What's the major plot twist of 'The Drama'?
During a dinner among friends that Emma (Zendaya) and Charlie (Pattinson) have prior to getting married, everyone at the table admits to the worst thing that they've ever done. Everyone around the table reveals shocking and innocuous things, and the audience doesn't even get to hear what Charlie's done.
However, when it gets to Emma, the narrative takes a massive turn. That's because she reveals she planned a school shooting that she had every intention of carrying out until the last moment. Emma explains that she was bullied after moving to a new school and even went so far as to practice firing her dad's gun, ruining her ability to hear in one of her ears.
What makes her story even more horrifying is that her decision to give up on the shooting wasn't predicated on a sudden change of heart internally, but rather, another shooting that just so happened to take place in the same town.
Not wanting her intended murderous spree to be forgotten in the wake of this other fatal event, she ditched the plan. But in the wake of doing so, she explained that she was horrified by what she was orchestrating. Subsequently, she became a staunch activist for gun control and threw away the weapon she was planning on using for the shooting.
The revelation understandably causes problems with the couple, and when Charlie raises his concerns, Emma begins pointing to her engaged partner's own imperfections, such as not being entirely honest about how the two of them initially met and the fact that he engages in cyberbullying.
As IGN points out, this plot twist doesn't occur late in the film, but rather lets audiences know almost from the get-go what the source of their marital strife is. When it comes to Charlie, Emma's issues are with how he presents their relationship and how he covers aspects of his character.
As for Emma, it's the whole school shooting thing. Ultimately, Emma and Charlie end up getting over their respective issues with one another, and they stay together, presenting more of their truthful selves. However, some audiences who viewed the flick weren't happy with its subject matter.
The BBC predicted that Emma's school shooting admission would "divide" theater goers. Others online have decried the film's subplot, like this X user who was disturbed by the movie's twist: "Am I too woke or like my whole theater audience was laughing too much at the 4chan school shooting grifting scenes of young Emma like this a real problem."
Another called the flick "super stupid." And it appears that some potential viewers were turned off from seeing the movie upon learning of the twist. One person wrote, "I was planning to see The Drama this Saturday. I just found out what the movie is actually about. … I am SO GRATEFUL for this warning. I have already been struggling recently due to the one-year anniversary of my school shooting. It’s been hard. I’m so glad I wasn’t blindsided."
