Whenever production companies turn a beloved, non-movie intellectual property into a film, they're relying on fans to show up and watch it in theaters. Which means that these films will often include a ton of fan service. And The Super Mario Bros. Movie did a heck of a job at just that. The aesthetic and spirit of the games were captured in its animation style and narrative, while creating a cinematic world with its own narrative that didn't deviate from its source material.
This fan service also included a bunch of Easter eggs and cameos, and the flick's sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy movie, is no different.
'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' Cameos
Warning: spoilers ahead.
Some of the cameos mentioned throughout this article were already featured in the trailer, and the characters referenced play larger roles than others, but let's just get right to it.
First, there's Princess Rosalina, who is shown at the top of the film reading bedtime stories to the cute group of Lumas who listen to her intently.
These stories are disturbed by Megaleg, a boss from the Mario Galaxy game, along with Bowser Jr. The Koopa prince is carrying the Magic Brush from Super Mario Wonder, and Kamek is back in action to help Bowser's cause.
Tostarenans are also featured in the flick while Mario and Luigi are riding motorbikes over the Sand Kingdom, and fans might recognize various Moe-Eyes in this portion of the movie as well.
It's in this scene where they come upon Yoshi, who becomes a staple of the new flick and joins the plumbing duo on their adventure. During Princess Peach's birthday scene, Mario receives a letter from the Mushroom Kingdom leader that Mario 64 fans will recognize, and Mario gifts her a pink parasol that those who played the Super Mario RPG game for the SNES will recall.
The Big Bertha fish makes an appearance when Luigi defeats the aquatic enemy while rocking a frog suit of Super Mario Bros. 3 fame. When Toad and Peach are on their way to the Gateway Galaxy, viewers are shown Star Bunnies, and after arriving, flashes of Whittles and Gearmos, along with a Ukiki monkey, are shown on the screen.
Wart, Birdo, Mouser, and Spike are all seen on a casino gaming floor in the flick, too. Later on in the film, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi end up meeting with Queen Bee, who's also in the Super Mario Galaxy game. One of the bigger cameos featured in the movie is that of Fox McCloud, whom the overall-wearing duo encounter.
Fox explains that his crew experienced an inadvertent Warp Drive error that took them off course, which he attributes to a mistake of crew engineer Slippy Toad. Luigi and Mario end up getting turned into baby versions of themselves by Bowser.
As babies, Mario and Luigi also come across a sleeping T. Rex that those who played Super Mario Odyssey will recognize, too. And in the final combat encounter, which is a dead ringer for the first Super Mario Bros. World 8-4 boss battle, Luigi gets a hold of the magic brush, and he creates a Mr. Game & Watch that vanquishes Bowser.
After the credits, Lumalee, the depressing and twisted Luma from the first Super Mario Bros. movie, visits Bowser Jr. and Bowser while they're in jail. And the final post-credits scene reveals Daisy, after she stops a Ukiki monkey from stealing something out of her bag.
There are probably a ton more hidden gems, references, and other characters throughout the movie that are not mentioned in this article. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, along with the entire production crew, did a bang-up job of packing in a ton of fanfare from the Mario universe inside the flick.
