Emotions are running high in the UK right now, as British prime minister Theresa May called an early election on Thursday night. May is extremely conservative, pushing to follow through on the Brexit referendum that would separate the UK from Europe, a decision largely motivated by nationalist fervor and xenophobia.
Lots of people truly hate her, especially self-identifying liberals. J.K. Rowling is no conservative Stan, but she is taking serious exception to how people are characterizing May online. Since May is a woman, you can probably guess where this is going:
Wow, can you imagine getting subtweeted like this by J.K. Rowling?! Probably the most awkward day of your life. Rowling is right—you can criticize a politician's policies until you're blue in the face, but do not bring slurs or gender bashing language into it. You hate them for who they are on the inside, not the outside.
Rowling's rant went on:
Rowling definitely knows what it's like to be a woman with a huge platform who gets harassed. The only thing I'd disagree with her on, or ask for more nuance about, is saying people shouldn't "compare women to prostitutes." People tend to use words that mean "sex worker" in a derogatory fashion, which is why it's so ugly. But that comes from how we regard sex work in general. It's a profession lots of people use, it's hard work, it's unsafe, and the people who do it deserve our respect and protection.
Anyway, this is Rowling's dissertation, not mine.
Expectedly, Rowling's comments are full of horrible replies, but here are a few not so bad ones to give you hope for humanity:
Also, Theresa May's election is going very badly, so there's that, too.
