Amanda's success with Nickelodeon led to several other projects, including the family film What a Girl Wants in 2003. She also starred in the 2006 sports comedy She’s the Man, and in Hairspray in 2007. Her role as Penny Pingleton in the film earned Amanda her first nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Her last movie was with Emma Stone in the romantic comedy Easy A. Amanda became depressed after making the movie and had already begun using Adderall for her insecurity issues while working on She’s the Man, in which she played her twin brother. Amanda had learned that some women abuse the drug to stay thin, and she began using it as well.

Why did Amanda Bynes's quit acting?

Amanda quit acting because she could no longer stand to see her appearance on screen. She told Paper Magazine back in 2018 that her problems began after filming She’s the Man.

"When the movie came out, and I saw it, I went into a deep depression for four to six months," she recalled. "Because I didn't like how I looked when I was a boy. I've never told anyone that," she said, adding that seeing herself as a boy was "a super strange and out-of-body experience."

However, Amanda said that working on her next film, Hairspray, was "amazing."

"That movie to this day was the most amazing experience I've ever had on a set," she said, but it was her next role that took her away from the craft.

"I literally couldn't stand my appearance in that movie, and I didn't like my performance," Amanda said. "I was absolutely convinced I needed to stop acting after seeing it."

Amanda struggled after she quit acting and was involved in several DUIs and hit-and-run accidents, leading to her arrest. She was also placed on a 72-hour involuntary psychiatric hold after she reportedly began a fire in the driveway of a stranger back in 2013, per The Hollywood Reporter. Her mother was named as her temporary conservator soon after and remained so until 2022, and Amanda reportedly got sober during that time.

“In the last several years, I have been working hard to improve my health so that I can live and work independently," she said. "And I will continue to prioritize my well-being in this next chapter."

Amanda graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in 2019. She still struggles with her mental health and noted on her Instagram Stories in 2024 that she was doing better after a bout with depression. She also told her fans that she was trying the GLP-1 drug Ozempic to lose weight.
