Brandy Says Her Relationship With Ray J Is "Distant" — "Loving Him From Afar Is Best"

Navigating the entertainment industry with a sibling is a blessing. You have someone to lean on through the ups and downs, while also having a person to stand up for you should things go wrong. And for Brandy and Ray J, the pair have always stood behind one another, no matter what the industry has thrown at them through the years.

It can be easy for a Hollywood sibling dynamic to go left, especially when there isn’t a mutual understanding. Over the years, Ray J has passionately spoken up for his sister amid controversy. However, he has often spoken out of turn, putting Brandy in a tough spot. So, where does Brandy and Ray J’s relationship stand today? Here’s everything that we know.

Unfortunately, there comes a time when siblings don’t see eye-to-eye. And according to Brandy, she and Ray J are currently going through a rough patch.

In an April 1, 2026, interview with Parade about her new memoir, Phases, Brandy shared her current dynamic with her brother.

“There is distance right now,” Brandy said. “There are a few things that he’s been doing in the public eye that I don’t condone, and I just feel like loving him from afar right now is best for me and my peace.”

She continued, “But my life with Ray and my connection with him are all throughout the book, and my love for him never wavers.”

Additionally, Brandy touched on the childhood memories the pair shared from their hometown of McComb, Miss., calling it her most fun phase to revisit.

“It’s where I learned gratitude,” the singer shared. ”It’s where I got a chance to hang out with my brother [Ray J] and with my grandparents and my aunt. It was fun to revisit what my dad [Willie Norwood] taught me about my voice during that time.”

It’s no secret that Ray J is overprotective when it comes to Brandy. As such, he has no qualms about addressing anyone he feels has disrespected his sister to protect her honor.

In March 2026, Ray J took to social media to call out Cam’ron, Mase, and Shyne over an interview on the It Is What It Is show. After the men discussed Shyne having a “relationship” with Brandy and Mase chiming in that he also had a fling with her, Ray J lost it.

"Keep my sister's name out of your mouth, and if not, I'm gonna slap the f--king daylights out of you when I see you," Ray J said on an Instagram Live, via Complex. "One thing [n-word] ain't gonna do is talk s**t about my sister without me going back on these big head a-- [n-word]."

While both sides traded insults, the feud eventually died down. Although some folks question Ray J’s antics, it’s clear as day that he does not play about his sister, and we expect nothing less.
