At the end of the Season 1 of HBO and BBC's His Dark Materials (based on Philip Pullman's book trilogy), audiences watched as Lyra (Dafne Keen) walked through the glowing arctic night sky after her father Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) killed her best friend Roger (Lewin Lloyd).
With Season 2, fans will watch Lyra in the parallel universe city of Cittàgazze.
Keep reading to find out more about Season 2 of the hit series His Dark Materials. (Warning: spoilers ahead).
'His Dark Materials' Season 2 will likely include a few major deaths.
Season 2 of His Dark Materials will be based on Philip Pullman's second novel The Subtle Knife. The series will pick up right where Season 1 concluded and Lyra will meet Will (Amir Wilson), the boy from our reality who stepped through the portal after killing a home invader.
“Cittàgazze is the ‘city of magpies’, built on greed,” lead writer Jack Thorne told Empire about what lies ahead in the upcoming season. “What Philip does beautifully is put these two very pure-hearted children in the middle of it, and allow them to wrestle with what their destiny should be. One of them has learned not to trust thanks to the events of Series 1, and the other has learned not to trust because of the events of his life. They’re brought together in this explosive combination.”
Fans of the trilogy know that Will is destined to wield the Subtle Knife, which has the ability to "slice between the worlds." In the trailer fans see that a great war is on the horizon and the Magisterium is hoping to conquer the other world.
"The child (aka Lyra) will bring the end of the great war," the witches, who are also gearing up for battle ahead, predict in the Season 2 trailer.
How will the 'The Subtle Knife' book compare to Season 2?
While the writers have stuck closely to Pullman's storyline in Season 1, it has not been confirmed if a few key details in Season 2 will be altered.
Fans of the book series know that there are a bunch of key character deaths in The Subtle Knife, but, will they come to fruition in the show?
In the second book, Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) is killed helping Will's father John Parry (Andrew Scott) escape. Though Will eventually reunites with his long lost dad, John is killed by a vengeful love-stricken witch.
The book ends with Will following in his late father's footsteps and proceeding to go find Lord Asriel to give him the knife. But, he soon finds that his friend Lyra is missing and the witches who were looking after her had been drained by Spectres.
At this time, it has not been confirmed if Lee and Will's father will be killed in Season 2 of the HBO and BBC adaptation, but based on Season 1 of His Dark Materials, we would not be surprised ...
Season 2 of His Dark Materials premieres on Nov. 16 on HBO Max.
