Kacey Musgraves is known for her strong vocals and genre-bending country sound, but every so often, she steps outside the music and says something that gets people talking.
The conversation around Kacey Musgraves's politics tends to resurface whenever old quotes or interviews make the rounds again.
So what has she actually said over the years, and where does she stand when it comes to major issues? Here's what we know.
Kacey Musgraves's politics come up most often when she speaks out on social issues.
Kacey has been open about why she does not frequently wade into political conversations. According to Variety, she once explained that she prefers to keep the focus on music unless an issue feels bigger than politics itself.
That line was crossed for her when discussing gun violence in 2019. She said, “I’m from Texas. I grew up around hunting and guns. There’s a time and place for that … but this is different. The system is majorly flawed, and NOBODY NEEDS ANYTHING REMOTELY AUTOMATIC. PERIOD.”
She added that when issues “dangerously encroach on fundamental human rights,” they stop being political and become about “humanity” and “survival."
But she's not anti-gun entirely. After the 2016 nightclub shooting in Orlando, she shared a series of emotional posts that drew attention online.
She initially tweeted about wanting to return to “saloon days” where people carried revolvers, a comment she later deleted after receiving backlash.
She followed that with a more measured statement. She wrote, “Look. Emotions are high today … LOVE is the only true answer. Hard subject tho. All I know is something isn’t working.”
Kacey has also been outspoken with criticism of President Donald Trump.
Kacey has not limited her comments to gun control. She has also spoken directly about former President Donald Trump and his policies.
In 2020, she posted on X, "To each their own but know what your vote means," and paired it with a rainbow image. The image read “If you love an LGBTQ+ person and you’re planning on voting for Donald Trump in November, that’s an act of violence against them.” The statement drew significant attention and reinforced her support for LGBTQ+ rights.
Many commenters didn't agree with her. @ZiaErica wrote "Wow! Thanks Kacey... I'll let my gay Republican friends know. ... By the way ... that felt so gross to refer to my friends by sexual orientation."
Her political moments sometimes take a lighter, but still pointed, approach.
Not all of her political commentary comes in the form of statements or tweets. In some cases, she has used humor and fundraising to make a point.
According to The Hill, she released a T-shirt reading “Cruzin for a bruzin’” in response to Sen. Ted Cruz’s trip to Cancun during the Texas winter storm crisis in February 2021.
She said proceeds from the shirt sales would go to Texans affected by the storm and to support homeless immigrants seeking shelter and food.
Looking at the full picture, Kacey does not fit neatly into the mold of a constantly political celebrity. Instead, she tends to speak when something feels personal or urgent, which is part of why her past comments still get attention.
