Law enforcement is investigating a mass shooting that occurred in Austin, Texas, as a "potential nexus to terrorism." According to KUVE News, the shooting happened on March 1, 2026. Lisa Davis, the police chief for the Austin Police Department, identified the shooter as Ndiaga Diagne. He reportedly drove an SUV around the block near Wood Street and Sixth Street before he began firing a handgun outside of Buford’s bar at approximately 2 a.m.
The shooter then parked his SUV close to Wood Street before getting out and shooting at people on Sixth Street with a rifle and a pistol. He was shot dead by police officers stationed nearby. Fourteen people were injured, and two were killed by the shooter before he was gunned down. The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force joined the investigation based on evidence that was recovered from the scene, and they are investigating a "potential nexus to terrorism," per FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge Alex Doran.
What does nexus to terrorism mean?
According to the Global Counterterrorism Forum, the nexus to terrorism refers to the growingintersection between organized crime and terrorist groups. CNN reports that Diagne was wearing a “Property of Allah” hoodie during the shooting, along with a T-shirt with Iran's flag. The FBI is investigating whether Diagne was motivated by the US and Israeli attack on Iran on Feb. 28.
ChiefAlex Doran revealed during a March 1 press conference that the FBI was investigating the shooting.
"Obviously, it’s still way too early in the process to determine an exact motivation," he said. "But there were indicators on the subject and then his vehicle that indicate a potential nexus to terrorism."
Cheif Davis added that the shooter shot patrons who were outside of the bar on the patio.
“At one point, he put his flashers on, rolled down his window, and began using a pistol, shooting out of his car windows, striking patrons of the bar that were on the patio and that were in front of the bar,” she said, before adding that he got out of the SUV to shoot more people before he was shot dead.
"Our suspect was coming toward East Austin or East Sixth Street, officers were coming toward him, and at the intersection, he was shot, and he was killed at this time,” she added.
In a joint attack on Feb. 28, the United States and Israel bombed Iran. The president claimed that governmental and military sites were the targets, but at least 165 people died after a girls' school was bombed in Minab, per Al Jazeera.
The Foreign Minister and Islamic Republic of Iran wrote on X after the deaths, "The destroyed building is a primary school for girls in the south of Iran. It was bombed in broad daylight, when packed with young pupils. Dozens of innocent children have been murdered at this site alone. These crimes against the Iranian People will not go unanswered."
