DC Comics Fans: The ‘Gotham City Sirens’ Movie May *Actually* Happen

There is no denying that DC Comics fans have been hoping, waiting, and wishing for a Gotham City Sirens movie for years. There has been so much back and forth about if the film could be possible, and if it was, who would be featured in it?

Recently, Twitter went crazy with the news that Warner Bros. has begun very early talks about a new movie that would feature Harley Quinn. Could it be the Gotham City Sirens movie that fans have been pining for?

There is no confirmation, but some believe ‘Gotham City Sirens’ could happen.

According to Jeremy Conrad, a writer for DCEU Mythic, a news website that covers the DC Extended Universe, there are definitely feelers out indicating that a new DC film is in the works and it will feature Harley Quinn and could come to theaters in 2022.

Jeremy wrote, “In talking with multiple sources today I’ve learned that Warner has begun very early talks and discussions about what the next big-screen Harley project will be. There’s absolutely no word yet on exactly what the project is, although I’m sure fans are crossing their fingers for Gotham City Sirens.”

He continued, “A couple of years ago, back before Birds of Prey was really turned into a Harley Quinn movie, there were rumors going around that beginning with that movie Warner wanted to feature Harley in some way every year in a DC film. 2020 is BoP, 2021 would be The Suicide Squad, which means whatever they’re talking about now could end up coming as early as 2022.”

The rumors of a ‘Gotham City Sirens’ movies started in 2016.

In December 2016, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that Margot Robbie would be reprising her role as Harley Quinn for a Gotham City Sirens film. They wrote, “David Ayer is back in the business of DC comic villains."

The filmmaker, who directed Warner Bros.’ all-bad guy comic book movie Suicide Squad, is reuniting with that film’s star, Margot Robbie, for Gotham City Sirens, a feature project that will showcase the top female villains from the DC stable.”

IMDB also has a page for the movie in which they have Margot listed as the sole cast member and the description, “Following three of Gotham City's most notorious female criminals on one of their most dangerous missions yet.”

At the time of this news, the film was set to be “fast-tracked” into production and would most definitely be done and released by now. So, why did Gotham City Sirens never happen?

In January 2020, David Ayer gave an update on the film.

According to ScreenRant, Warner Bros. began to switch up its strategy regarding its DC films. This new strategy included Gotham City Sirens being put on pause. Margot Robbie ended up starring in Birds of Prey and will also be in James Gunn's reboot/sequel The Suicide Squad instead.

ScreenRant reported, “While speaking at a Television Critics Association press event, Ayer was asked about the status of Gotham City Sirens. He didn't have much news to give, aside from saying, "No, I think it's on pause.’”

DC fans are still holding out hope that ‘Gotham City Sirens’ could happen.

When DCEU Mythic tweeted out the rumors of DC execs talking about a new Harley Quinn project, Twitter went wild with hope. @BatmanFiles  tweeted, “If the next movie featuring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn isn't Gotham City Sirens I'm gonna have words with WB.”

Another user echoed, “If the rumour about the new Harley movie is true, I at least hope it’s a Gotham City Sirens movie. We NEED.”
