For the First Time Ever, All the Grammy Nominees for Best Rock Performance Are Women
For the first time ever, every single Grammy nominee for Best Rock Performance is a woman or a band fronted by a woman.
People have lots of feelings about the 2021 Grammy Awards nominations, which were released to the Twitterverse (and the rest of the world) on November 24. There were surprises! There were snubs!
But the nominees in one of the coolest categories, Best Rock Performance, made history this year because every single one of the nominees is either a woman or a ban fronted by a woman. That's a Grammys first, believe it or not. And people were stoked.
The Grammy nominees for Best Rock Performance this year are: Fiona Apple's "Shameika," Phoebe Bridgers' "Kyoto," Haim's "The Steps," Brittany Howard's "Stay High," Grace Potter's "Daylight," and Big Thief's "Not." Big Thief's front-woman is Adrianne Lenker.
Rock and roll finally belongs to the women, as it should. My personal favorite artists on this list are Haim, Fiona, and Brittany, but honestly, I'm just excited this whole category is filled to the brim with badass rockers who happen to be women. And lots of people agree.
Several of the nominees themselves posted about their nominations on social media. This was one of many for several of the artists. In addition to Best Rock Performance, for example, Brittany Howard was also nominated for Best Alternative Music Album for Jaime, Best Rock Song for "Stay High," Best R&B Performance for "Goat Head," Best American Roots Performance for "Short and Sweet," and Best Production, Non-Classical for Jaime.
"I'm so honored for the GRAMMY nominations today!" she wrote on Instagram. "Sending much love to all involved with this album and many thanks to all at the @recordingacademy for their support!"
Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim, the three sisters that comprise the band Haim, showed their appreciation a little differently. "WE TOLD YOUUUUUUUUU!!!" they wrote on the band's official Instagram, along with a picture of them flashing their underwear, which reads s"Women make the best rock music," to the camera. "Women DO make the best rock music CONGRATS TO ALL THE LADIESSSSSSS!!"
Congrats to all the nominees but especially to these amazing women and rock musicians who managed to put out incredible music in this crazy year.
