It’s Not a Joke, Dunkin’ Is Actually Giving Away Free Coffee — All the Details
"Don’t play with us! @dunkin."

We all know what happens on April 1, right? Someone tells you something shocking or disturbing, waits a few seconds, and then hits you with the “April Fools!”
And while it’s probably a relief that whatever they told you was just a joke, Dunkin' (or Dunkin’ Donuts, still in many of our minds) announced it would be giving away free coffee of any size on April 1, 2026, and people are really hoping this isn’t like the other lines they’ve been hit with that end in an “April Fools!”
So, is Dunkin’ really giving away free coffee? Here’s everything you need to know if you’re hoping to get your hands on a free cup of joe.
Is Dunkin' actually giving away free coffee?
Dunkin’ is actually giving away free coffee on April 1, 2026, to the first 1,000,001 Dunkin’ Rewards members who order a drink of any size in the Dunkin’ app using the code STILLNOTAJOKE. The problem is that many people thought it was an April Fools' joke, and still do, because it’s April 1, and who gives away anything free anymore?
Apparently, Dunkin’ still does. The brand is rewarding its customers by having a little fun on April 1 by offering free coffee, though the chain did note in a press release and on Instagram that Cold Brew and Extra-Large Hot Coffee are not included in the giveaway.
The coffee chain was very much aware that not everyone believed it was being that generous, writing on Instagram: “since there are still doubters out there, we’re going to take it to a whole new level this year by giving out … 1,000,001 free coffees.” The only joke here is that Dunkin’ gave out 1 million free coffees in 2025, so the whole idea of “upping the ante” by just one is the punchline. Get it?
Anyhow, Dunkin’ seems to be adopting this as a new tradition of giving away free coffee on April 1, aka April Fools’ Day, as this is now the second year the coffee chain has offered it, and hopefully, it will continue.
Dunkin’ ran out of free coffee coupon codes within hours of announcing the promotion.
While it’s certainly generous of Dunkin’ to spoil its customers with free coffee on April 1, it didn’t last long, because just hours after the April 1, 2026 promotion started, it was over. Dunkin’ announced at 12 a.m. on Instagram that it was giving away free coffee to Rewards members (meaning you do need the app downloaded and be an active member, but it’s free!).
But by 9:30 a.m., the company announced in the comments of its post: “All 1,000,001 codes have been redeemed this April Fools’ Day. There are no more codes available for this drop. Follow us for more free coffee codes in the future.”
So it seems many people rushed into the app after the announcement, redeemed the code, and made it impossible for anyone else to grab their free cup of joe. And let’s just say people weren’t happy about it.
For those who knew Dunkin’ wasn’t joking when it said it would be giving out free coffee, they were sorely disappointed when they realized the coupon code had already stopped working by early morning. One person commented on Dunkin’s post, “I feel like they should be dropped in waves. Working people be sleep at midnight tf,” and they have a valid point. Another wrote, “They were gone by 6 apparently. They should’ve stated this deal was only for those who are chronically online.”
Now, one person did claim they were able to get a free coffee in 2025 around 10 or 11 a.m., so whatever Dunkin’ did differently this time, they might want to rethink for next year so others who are up around 6 or 7 a.m. at least stand a shot at getting their cup of coffee.
