Season 4 of TLC's 90 Day Fiancé: Love in Paradise follows several couples trying to make their relationship work while navigating one another’s cultural differences, from language barriers to food preferences. One of the couples, Shawn Finch and Alliya Batista, showed they have more to learn about one another since they first got together.

Shawn and Alliya shared that they met on a dating app during the season. At the time, Alliya, a Brazillian beachwear designer, identified as a man named Douglas.

“Alliya is the personification of all of the shine Douglas had to show,” Alliya’s letter continued. “Today, I say goodbye to all the negativity that his name carried. Goodbye, Douglas.”

Alliya began crying as she continued reading the end of the letter. At one point, her loved ones also shed a few tears as they said goodbye to Douglas. Fortunately, Alliya’s tears were a mix of emotions, as she was happy to have the space to be herself. However, in her letter, she admits Douglas was her “foundation” and will forever be a part of her journey.

“You were my foundation, but now it’s time for me to fly,” Alliya read before crying in the final scene.

Shawn has struggled with Alliya’s transition on ‘90 Day Fiance: Love in Paradise.’

Alliya’s transition has tested her relationship with Shawn. Shawn, a gay man, was initially attracted to Alliya as Douglas and said in a previous episode that his partner is “way different” than she was before. In the same episode, Alliya wondered if their relationship could handle her choice to never identify as Douglas again.

Based on the exclusive clip, Shawn fully supports Alliya, though the couple is still adjusting to their new reality. While Shawn didn’t say anything in the clip, he remained by Alliya’s side as she freed herself from Douglas. And, in most cases, that’s all the support you need.
