If you were a '90s kid in any sense of the phrase, then you probably remember Supermarket Sweep in all of its hectic glory. And now that Netflix added the original series to its roster, subscribers have been reliving some of the iconic episodes hosted by David Ruprecht, who is arguably the most memorable host of the series in all of its incarnations.
The first version of the game show aired on ABC in the 60s and was hosted by Bill Malone. Later, David Ruprecht became the host when it was rebooted in the 90s and then again in the early 2000s. After 2003, Supermarket Sweep ended yet again, but there is another reboot in the works and it, too, has fans wondering whatever happened to the host they either got to know back in the day or are getting to know on Netflix now.
The 90s 'Supermarket Sweep' host wants to be part of the reboot now.
David might be best known for his role as the trusty Supermarket Sweep host, but he is also an actor. And since Supermarket Sweep ended for the third time in 2003, he has been taking on small acting roles in various TV movies and shows. He was in episodes of True Blood, Joan of Arcadia, and Cold Case. David was also in the 2020 drama The Author, The Star, and The Keeper. But now, he wants back in with the show that really skyrocketed his fame.
When word got out that there is a Supermarket Sweet reboot in the works, David was all about trying to be a part of it in some way. He told TMZ that he made it to the shortlist for the role of the announcer. And, he said, he would love to be able to give the show’s new host any tips as an OG himself.
"I would love to be part in any way to carry on the legacy of Supermarket Sweep," he said. "And yes, there is some interest in me doing the announcing."
But Leslie Jones is already onboard for the new 'Supermarket Sweep.'
If David is brought on as the announcer, it would be the perfect way to pay homage to the years he spent hosting Supermarket Sweep. But the role of host is already filled by Saturday Night Live alum Leslie Jones who once tried to be a contestant on the show herself. According to Deadline, ABC won the bid to host the revival, as it was the original network of the series. And, if all goes according to plan, it will start off with 10 episodes of grocery shopping madness.
When does the 'Supermarket Sweep' reboot premiere?
Although the Supermarket Sweep reboot was originally slated to premiere in the spring of 2020, the COVID-19 production shutdown caused the game show and a bevy of other series to be put on hold until filming could resume. Now, however, it looks like Supermarket Sweep will premiere on ABC in the fall of 2020 on Sunday nights.
Until the Supermarket Sweep reboot premieres, however, you can still watch some of the original episodes on Netflix. Sure, it’s a little dated, but watching a game show that is rooted in more reality than some reality TV shows that air these days is half the fun.
The original Supermarket Sweep is now available on Netflix.
