It's not uncommon for sports stars to be idolized by their fans. But for players like Sarah Graves, they become an overnight sensation, and deservedly so.
The Texas Longhorns player went from walk-on to fan favorite in an eyeblink.
But what makes Sarah so popular? Is it her style on court, her skills, or her personality? Or maybe a little bit of all three? Here's what we know about what makes the basketball star so popular, and what we know about her as a person as she embarks on the start of what seems to be a promising career.
Why is basketball star Sarah Graves so popular?
In March 2026 the Longhorns thundered to a 77-41 victory over third-seeded Michigan in the Fort Worth Regional 3 championship game on March 30.
And a good part of that victory can be attributed to Sarah. Sarah, who started her career with the Longhorns as a walk-on and is now a scholarship superstar.
Her early career was limited, with the basketball star playing only one minute as a freshman and nine as a sophomore, according to KTVB. Her junior year, she saw 27 minutes on the court.
This year, the team coach, Vic Schaefer, called her to play 20 times. But what happened on March 30 was still a stunning escalation for the talented young player.
She said of the game, "I mean, I told my teammates that I would owe them dinner if they went up 30, and they did the job. That’s why I was going so crazy on the bench because I knew I’d get another shot at it.”
And Sarah herself, who was tickled as the crow chanted, "Put in Sarah!" capped off the game with a jaw-dropping long two-pointer which really drove home the impressive win over Michigan.
Part of her fame can be attributed to her skill; her two-pointer against Michigan being her 37th and 38th points scored for her team.
But her popularity goes beyond that. Her heart is truly in the game, and people notice.
Longhorns senior Rori Harmon told reporters, "She pours so much into us every day. I’ve been here with Sarah for quite some time, so I truly feel that from the bottom of my heart, how excited I get and our teammates get for her, because she’s always just giving and giving and never expects anything. She’s a great leader, she’s a great culture kid. She does so much for us, so when she goes out there, and she has a great attitude every time she gets into the game, and she does something like that?"
Rori added, "We see it in practice. Not a lot of people see that, but that turnaround fade in the paint that she had is a great shot to have" (excerpts via Houston Chronicle).
Add her heart, dedication to her team, and incredible skill together and mix it with some humility and you have a recipe for a budding superstar.
Here's what we know about Sarah Graves.
According to Sporting News, Sarah was raised by her parents, John and Nicole Graves. They weren't overly interested in basketball, but they quickly learned that Sarah had what it took to make herself a star.
Nicole told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, '“When Sarah decided she fell in love with the game of basketball, she realized she was really far behind."
She added, "She started calculating, OK, I need to spend this many hours in the gym. I need to start learning these drills, and she, like, wrote her own little playbook. I think when she started, it kind of inspired her younger sister and so they just both got really into it, and from that moment on, she never, never once looked back.”
Sarah, who is graduating this year and went out with a bang from the Longhorns, was raised in nearby Keller, Tx., and seems completely blown away by all the fan devotion.
She mused after the team's impressive Final Four win, “I'm almost at a loss for words. I almost started crying on the court again because looking around me and just being in the present moment and hearing everybody chant your name is a surreal feeling that I’ll never forget.”
