Power couple Shea and Syd McGee say their home design business started “in a spare bedroom with lots of big ideas and no room for fabric samples.” And from those humble beginnings came a thriving company and the new Netflix series Dream Home Makeover.
Since Dream Home Makeover is already our new binge obsession, we’re answering frequently asked questions about the next big home design stars. (Like are Shea and Syd McGee Mormon? Read on!)
Who are Shea and Syd McGee?
Shea and Syd are the married couple behind Studio McGee, an interior design and e-commerce business with 70 employees and clients all over the world, according to Netflix.
The couple started the company after Syd’s digital marketing firm was acquired. “While Syd was re-grouping, I figured I would do what I could [do] (with a two-month-old baby) to help [tide] us over with my blossoming little design business — I launched a website and got an Instagram account. And everything changed,” Shea blogged in 2014.
“My business grew exponentially,” Shea added. “I had people from throughout Southern California, and even across the country, asking me to design their homes. I had no idea how to handle the workload, but never considered working with my husband to be an option. And then one day it clicked. Syd was searching for a new start-up to dive into and there was the perfect candidate right in front of him. I remember crying and asking, ‘Are you sure we can do this?’ As it turns out, the answer was, ‘Yes!’”
With that new plan in mind, the couple sold their home, moved to Utah, and started Studio McGee in Salt Lake City. And the rest, as they say, is home design history.
Are Shea and Syd McGee Mormon?
There’s no readily available information about Shea and Syd’s faith, but Shea did graduate from Brigham Young University — a private researcher university owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the Mormon Church — with a B.A. in communications and public relations in 2007 before studying interior design at Saddleback College.
A page on Mormon Wiki, meanwhile, claims both Shea and Syd are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but the page doesn’t list a source for that information.
What is ‘Dream Home Makeover’?
Dream Home Makeover is a six-episode series that shines a spotlight on both Syd and Shea’s home design skills and their family life.
“Dream Home Makeover melds together the personal side of the McGee’s, what it’s like to raise their two daughters and build their own dream home, along with the day to day of running a successful business,” the streaming platform says in a press release.
“Each episode features one home design project that ranges from budget-friendly living room upgrades to full home renovations where money isn’t an object.”
In short, Netflix adds, it’s “the perfect aspirational design series with relatable tips for viewers looking to bring beauty into their own abodes through the journey of this talented husband-and-wife duo.”
