What happened to Christina Marie Plante?

After being ruled a “missing person” since May 1994, Christina has been found. According to the New York Post, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office revealed that a breakthrough in the case led to them finding Christina alive.

“Christina was entered into national missing children databases, and missing person flyers were distributed locally, statewide, and in other parts of the country,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement via the outlet. “Over the years, the case remained open and active, with investigators periodically re-examining evidence and pursuing new information as it became available. After 32 years, Christina Marie Plante has been located alive.”

At the time of her disappearance, it was clear that Christina had disappeared under “suspicious circumstances.” In the statement, per The Guardian, sheriffs said they conducted “exhaustive ground searches and interviews,” along with an “investigative follow-up.” But unfortunately, “no viable leads were developed.”

However, since sheriffs were committed to the case, they had developed a “Cold Case Unit” that “marked a renewed commitment to unresolved investigations.” And thanks to the team “utilizing advances in technology, modern investigative techniques, and detailed case review,” it gave the family and the Star Valley community answers they’ve been waiting for.

Sheriffs say that they will not release any more details about the case at this time.

Although the world is hoping to figure out what led to Christina’s disappearance, it looks like she’s deciding to remain mum about the matter.

After the sheriff's office announced that they had “confirmed her identity, and her status as a missing person has been officially resolved,” they decided not to share any more details regarding the case. The reason? Law enforcement says it's “out of respect for Christina’s privacy and well-being.”

However, that hasn’t stopped folks from digging. NewsNation’s Jesse Weber Live shared an interview with Cold Case Unit Captain Jamie Garett, who shared that Christina “ran away all those years ago with the help of a family member.”

“I guess she wasn’t happy with where she was living and who she was living with, and she ran away,” Captain Garrett shared. “I was dumbfounded.”

Interestingly, Captain Garrett shared that she wasn't initially sure if she had found the right person since Christina has since changed her name and gotten married. After leaving a message, Christina returned the call and validated all her beliefs.

Captain Garrett shared that she told Christina that they were under the impression that she was kidnapped, but Christina wouldn’t go into detail about how she was able to leave. However, based on the conversation, Christina shared that she left with “an undisclosed family member.”

That said, Captain Garrett concluded the interview by sharing that her disappearance turned out not to be a crime and that she was simply “unhappy.”
