Weather changes in Grand Theft Auto are nothing new. However, snow is in a league of its own. Players have likely seen Los Santos covered in white, yet many still wonder why it is happening. The answer is simpler than it looks. Rockstar Games has not turned the map into a permanent winter setting.

The Grand Theft Auto series started in 1997 with the original game developed by DMA Design, now known as Rockstar North. The franchise leveled up in 2001 with Grand Theft Auto III, which introduced a fully 3D open world and changed gaming for good. From there, the series kept growing into a global powerhouse.

Now, a seasonal change has players locked in again, trying to figure out why snow is falling across the map.

Why is it snowing on 'GTA' Online?

Snow in free roam is usually tied to Rockstar’s recurring holiday event, the Festive Surprise or a closely related year-end seasonal update. Rockstar has rolled out holiday-themed GTA Online updates across multiple years, including 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025, which is why players now treat the snow as part of the game’s December tradition. Rockstar treats snow like a seasonal switch. The studio activates it during the holidays and pairs it with gifts, themed outfits, decorations, and limited-time bonuses.

“The holidays have commenced in GTA Online, with festive apparel now appearing in clothing stores throughout Southern San Andreas alongside trees and decorations going up at local landmarks and inside your owned properties — including tasteful holiday décor inside your lavish new mansion property. Snowy conditions are also forecast for later in the month, so prepare accordingly,” Rockstar said in its December 2025 Newswire update.

The weather does change in GTA, but not all weather works the same. Per Rockstar, regular conditions like rain, fog, and clear skies are part of the game’s normal environmental systems, and the company has also built weather options into some creator and lobby tools. Additionally, new ambient settings, such as Snow and Halloween weather patterns in Community Series content, show that snow can also appear in certain created modes and events. But in the main open world, snow is usually treated as a special holiday feature, not everyday weather.

When will 'GTA 6' be released?

The latest official word is that Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on Nov. 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The release comes months after the scheduled slot, after moving the game back from its earlier May 26, 2026, target.

“We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve,” the announcement reads. “We want to thank you again for your patience and support. While the wait is a little longer, we are incredibly excited for players to experience the sprawling state of Leonida and a return to modern-day Vice City.”
