Lots of people love a good old-fashioned Disney princess movie. Beautiful princess, handsome prince, happily ever after, yadda yadda yadda. For others, though, that’s not quite enough. Some people prefer a bit more spooky magic (and Bette Midler) in their movie night. For those people, Hocus Pocus is the perfect Disney film.
Here’s what we know about the ‘Hocus Pocus 2’ Disney Plus release date.
Rumors of a Hocus Pocus 2 have been swirling for years. Way back in 2014, Disney was working on a supernatural film about witches starring (and produced by) Tina Fey. Everyone freaked out and thought it was a Hocus Pocus sequel or remake — but it wasn’t.
Rumors also made the rounds in 2016, 2017, and 2018, but there was no confirmation of a Hocus Pocus 2 until we finally got the official word in October of 2019 that Disney was making a sequel to the 1993 cult classic. The screenplay was written by Workaholics writer and co-producer Jen D’Angelo. In March of 2020, we found out that the film officially has a director: Adam Shankman (whose name is also attached to Disenchanted, the sequel to Enchanted).
Beyond that, though, details are pretty limited. According to the IMDb page for Hocus Pocus 2, the film is currently in pre-production. Right after Adam Shankman signed on to direct the sequel, the COVID-19 pandemic started affecting basically every single production, so it’s pretty safe to say they have not started filming for Hocus Pocus 2 yet.
If we had to guess, we would say that Hocus Pocus 2 will most likely be coming to Disney Plus sometime in 2021. And given that it’s a Halloween movie, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it slated for the fall — maybe even Halloween weekend (the holiday falls on a Sunday next year). We’ll have to wait a while for the sequel, but hey — at least we don’t have to wait 300 years like the Sanderson sisters did, right?
What is the ‘Hocus Pocus’ sequel about?
We don’t know for sure what the Hocus Pocus sequel will be about, but there could be a clue in a book that came out in 2018. It was called Hocus Pocus and the All-New Sequel and it was officially released by Disney Publishing Worldwide.
The sequel (in the book) takes place 25 years after the events of the 1993 film and focuses on Max and Allison’s 17-year-old daughter, Poppy. Poppy has grown up hearing her parents talk about the witches they defeated when they were kids, but she’s pretty skeptical about the whole thing — until she comes face-to-face with Sanderson sisters herself.
It’s possible that Jen D’Angelo’s screenplay covers this same story, or maybe we’ll see something else completely when we finally get to watch Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney Plus. In the meantime, we’ll just have to be patient.
