If you're a new viewer of Chrisley Knows Best, you might be asking yourself, "Who is that adorable little girl named Chloe?"
There is no denying that Chloe — who goes by the nickname Coco and is a pretty impressive equestrian— steals the spotlight of every episode she's on of the USA reality series, but it can be hard to keep up with the Chrisley family, especially when it comes to the custody drama surrounding their 6-year-old granddaughter.
So, who is Chloe Chrisley?
Chloe is the daughter of Todd Chrisley's son, Kyle, with his ex, Angela Johnson. The couple welcomed the baby girl in 2012 — but Kyle struggled for years with drug addiction. "Kyle is bipolar and normally, people that are bipolar, they seek out a way to self-medicate, which is what Kyle has done since he’s been young,” Todd told E! News in 2014.
His ex-girlfriend also accused Kyle of abuse during her pregnancy. "He grabbed me and choked me when I was pregnant,” she told Life & Style at the time. "There was a time when he got mad at me and came at me with a knife while I was holding Chloe. He was talking about stabbing me, then threw a bottle of pills and hit me and Chloe right in the face with them."
Why does Todd have custody of his granddaughter, Chloe?
Kyle was arrested and charged with assault one year after his daughter's birth — giving shared custody to Todd and her mother, Angela. However, in 2016, Angela was arrested allegedly claiming Chloe as a dependent to defraud medicaid and food stamps, which granted Todd full custody of his granddaughter.
On multiple occasions, Kyle has accused his family of using Chloe to boost the ratings on their TV show. "My dad showed no interest in Chloe at all until the show and until it was pointed out that having a mixed race child and getting her and all that would be good for his demographic," he told the Daily Mail. "He didn’t want to see her before then. He said he wanted nothing to do with her."
This is something Todd has denied on multiple occasions, telling Us Weekly, "Chloe is our family, and we are glad that the world gets to see such a beautiful child grow, explore and come into herself so brilliantly through love and respect. More recently, he gushed on Instagram, "The sweetest gift from God, I Thank you dear lord for every blessing you’ve ever given me, for every lesson I learned the hard way, for all the things I was wrong about and for the ability to love, forgive, and accept and move on, THIS CHILD IS OUR BLESSING and we will honor that for every day we are given and beyond."
Where are Chloe's mother and father today?
Today, Kyle is sober and remarried to a woman named Alexus. The couple is currently living in Georgia and recently purchased a 3,000-square-foot home together. "I do not talk to my family but I wish them nothing but the best," Kyle told Radar Online last year. "I have moved on with my life. I am just going to be the best father and husband that I can be."
He continued, "I never would have dreamed that I would own a 3,000 foot house and we are just so blessed. I cannot wait to start a family with my wife once we are all settled in. She is my best friend and is going to make a great mother."
As for Angela, Chloe's mother has been keeping a very low profile on social media— last sharing a photo with her daughter in 2016 — but her Twitter bio reveals how she feels about Chloe. "I have a beautiful baby girl who I will do anything for and love dearly," it reads. However, it doesn't seem like Todd isn't planning on giving up custody of Chloe anytime soon, but he does hope Kyle will play a role in her life at some point in the future.
"He's not in the spotlight, but Chloe is with us, and my hopes are that as time progresses that she will know who her daddy is and that their relationship will change at some point," Todd said before adding, "I say, 'God gives you what you never knew you needed' and we needed that. She has literally changed our lives in so many different ways," he said. "She's opened our mind to so many things that we didn't even know existed."
