Ivanka Trump became the target of criticism following her father's announcement that he would ban transgender Americans from serving in the military in any capacity.
The move by President Trump was an abrupt reversal of an Obama administration decision, which would have allowed transgender servicemembers to serve openly. Less than two months ago, Ivanka Trump tweeted her support for transgender and gay Americans. She also expressed her support for Pride Month.
I am proud to support my LGBTQ friends and the LGBTQ Americans who have made immense contributions to our society and economy.— Ivanka Trump (@IvankaTrump) June 2, 2017
Following Trump's announcement of the transgender service ban, Twitter users wondered how real Ivanka's support of the LGBTQ community is.
Ivanka Trump and her husband, presidential adviser Jared Kushner, were perceived as a moderating force on social issues after they helped kill an executive order that would have rolled back LGBT protections. Neither of them, however, spoke out publicly after the White House revoked protections that would have allowed transgender students to use public school restrooms that best relate to their gender identity.
In March, Trump signed an executive order that revoked prior orders that provided anti-discrimination protections for . Specifically, the president’s decree revokes three previous orders signed by former President Barack Obama, including Executive Order 13673, the “Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Order.” Once again, the president's daughter and her husband were silent.
We are still awaiting any reaction from Ivanka and Jared to President Trump's tweets yesterday announcing the ban of transgender service in the military.
