It’s been 12 whole years since we heard from Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. The final book of the Twilight trilogy (Breaking Dawn) was published in 2008. That same year, twelve chapters of Midnight Sun, the story told through Edward’s perspective, was leaked. If you missed those crazy vampire kids, you were probably psyched to learn in May 2020 that Midnight Sun will officially be published in August. But does that mean we’ll be getting another Twilight movie out of it?
Is there going to be a new Twilight movie?
On May 4, Stephanie Meyer, the author who brought Bella and Edward’s love story to life, took to her blog to announce that Midnight Sun is set to be published August 4. Whether or not it’ll be adapted into another movie is a mystery — but chances are pretty good that we’ll eventually get another Twilight movie. Altogether, the Twilight franchise earned just over $3.3 billion worldwide, with each movie earning more than the last. The first Twilight movie brought in $402 million (worldwide) and the last (Breaking Dawn: Part 2) brought in a whopping $829 million.
All five installments of the Twilight series were super lucrative, so there’s no question that Summit entertainment will want to get their hands on a Midnight Sun script. The only problem is that Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart, who played Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, will probably not want to revisit their roles. Both have been super vocal about how much they disliked the movies and that being a part of the franchise even hurt their careers.
In a Vanity Fair interview, Robert stated, “Having a personal people recognize, it’s the thing that probably gets you paid the most — but it’s also the thing that virtually every actor in the world doesn’t want. Cause, like, no one would believe me if I wanted to play something ultra-realistic, like, a gangster or something.” In 2012, during an interview with WOIO who asked if he’d stolen anything on set, Robert stated, “My dignity.”
When asked if they’d ever want to do a reboot, Robert told Variety, “The amount of time I’ve spent moisturizing, I am ready to play 17 at a moment’s notice. Ready!” Kristen told Entertainment Tonight (who asked the same questions), “Yes, absolutely. Honestly, just start sending scripts my way. Let’s start building this. Let’s really explore it.” (Yup, that was sarcasm.)
What’s Midnight Sun about?
So, the other issue about the idea of Kristen and Robert reprising their roles is that Midnight Sun goes back in time and tells the entire story of how Bella met Edward from Edward’s perspective. As great as our CGI capabilities are (and as amazing as both Kristen and Robert look), it would be pretty silly to depict them as high schoolers again. This means that Midnight Sun would have to completely recast the entire movie if the producers want to do it properly. Maybe a new vampire legacy is exactly what we need (and deserve) though.
