And the trailer for the movie, which was officially released on Thursday, Dec. 12, revealed that the starring role of Usnavi de la Vega will be played by none other than Anthony Ramos. So if you aren't already familiar with the 28-year-old Brooklyn-born actor, here is everything you need to know about him.
Anthony Ramos from In the Heights is an actor from New York.
Anthony — born Anthony Ramos Martinez — is of Puerto Rican descent, and hails from the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. According to The Famous People, he was born on Nov. 1, 1991. At a young age, Anthony decided he wanted to pursue acting, and studied at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Soon after graduating in 2011, he made his theatrical debut in the popular musical ‘Grease.’
After Grease, Anthony toured with a number of musicals, including In the Hearts and 21 Chump Street. But he snagged his breakout role when he was cast in Lin Manuel Miranda's award-winning musical, Hamilton, which gained tremendous popularity. From there, he received major film roles, from Elizabeth Woods' White Girl, to the commercial flop, Monsters and Men.
He's currently in a long-term relationship.
Sorry, ladies and gents — our beloved Anthony has been taken for quite a while now. He is currently in a long-term relationship with Jasmine Cephas Jones, a critically-acclaimed Broadway actress, singer, and dancer who played the roles of both Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in Hamilton.
According to Who's Dated Who, Anthony and Jasmine dated for several years before they decided to take things a step further — the two lovebirds officially got engaged in December 2018. There's no publicized wedding date as of right now, but it goes without saying I'm hoping for an invite.
Anthony's In the Heights role is major.
As I said previously, Anthony is starring in the In the Heights film adaptation which is set to premiere in spring 2020. He is playing the main role of Usnavi, who was originally played by Lin Manuel Miranda himself. Usnavi narrates the play, and owns a small bodega in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood, where most of the musical takes place, according to Fandom.
Usnavi was named after "U.S. Navy" as a U.S. Navy ship was apparently one of the first things his parents saw upon immigrating to America from their home country, the Dominican Republic. Usnavi's parents died when he was young, and he was raised by the neighborhood "Abuela," Claudia. He dreams of moving back to the Dominican Republic someday, and eventually falls in love with a girl named Vanessa. If you haven't seen the full trailer, check it out, below.
With his lengthy resume and Broadway experience, there's no doubt in my mind that Anthony Ramos is going to slay the role of Usnavi. While recent trailers for other musical-to-film adaptations definitely aren't too enticing (ahem, Cats), it looks like In the Heights is going to be seriously stellar.
