A woman named Vivian Gomez went viral for posting a clip of the security footage from outside her house from a few nights ago. "So I woke up Sunday morning and say this on my camera and am trying to figure out...what the heck??" she wrote on Facebook.
After seeing this bonkers footage, you'll be asking yourself, "What the heck??" too.
The clip was reposted to Twitter, where people instantly started freaking out.
And like, 100 percent, yes, this warrants a freak out. I have watched this clip probably twenty times at this point, and every time, it's just as spine-tingling as the next. First you see the shadow of this floppy-eared creature, and then it appears, white as a sheet and spindly, and seems to do a creepy little dance as it walks off into the night. Like...what?! But the internet knew right away what was going on.
It's Dobby, y'all!
That thing on camera looks weirdly like Dobby, the beloved house elf from the Harry Potter series. If any of that stuff was real, this would be a no-brainer. It was Dobby in the footage, free at last, chicken-dancing his way to his new life.
Need even more proof?
Obviously! Obviously Dobby apparated out of there. On Facebook, Vivian maintains that this is not fake. She confirms that this happened at 9:59 p.m. (she goes to bed early), and while she didn't submit it to any news organizations, she wrote in the comments that "if anyone tested it or whatever they do, it would confirm it's not altered."
If the video isn't altered in any way, then what's going on?
It's super spooky! The way it moves makes it seem like it's either having a grand old time dancing to some music, or it's like, trying to imitate human walking movements without much success, like an alien from another planet would do. It's totally unnerving and hard to watch, but then again, I can't look away. And I keep pressing play and watching it again. What's wrong with me?
So there you have it, folks. Either Dobby or an alien really did saunter into this woman's security footage last night...
...Or something else fishy is going on. We only know one thing for certain; this is super creepy and terrifying and nightmare-inducing, whether it's Dobby or not. I would not be thinking, "Cool, Dobby!" if this was the footage from outside my house at night.
Twitter immediately came with the house elf jokes, but like, if you think about it, this is actually concerning! For anyone else who is like, "OK, but for real, though, it's not Dobby, so what is it?" there might be an explanation out there.
At least one Twitter user seems to think he figured it out:
If you watch the footage a couple more times, this explanation begins to make sense. But even if it makes sense, that doesn't mean it's any less creepy. Why would a kid wear shorts on his head and prance around weirdly outside at night like that? Not cool! Not cool at all!
But the rest of Twitter is pretty firmly on the Dobby train.
So maybe it really is the mischievous little house elf. Maybe Dobby has chosen to use his freedom to spook the pants off a bunch of unsuspecting Muggles, in which case, more power to ya, Dobs.
